$10 Fix For Those Outdated Bathroom Fixtures

Hi Everyone,

We are still in the process of fixing up my family's rental property but I thought I would share a nice trick with you.  Since bathroom fixtures can get kind of expensive here is a great trick that I have seen on many other awesome blogs (like here).  I was hesitant to try it but I'm sold since we are trying to make this play nice on a budget.   We refinished the old (and rusty) raceway style lighting fixture and the toilet paper holder.

All you need is some time and these two precious items below:

First clean the fixtures to be painted thoroughly. Wipe them clean and let them dry.

Next you can set them up in a well ventilated area on some plastic sheeting or other steady, disposable surface. For painting the light fixture remember to wrap and the wires in the back before you spray anything.

Prime with one layer of Rustoleum metal primer (pictured above). This will make the pieces look like they are the color of rust, but don't fret, this will serve as a great base for the next step.

Allow to dry for several house before applying Oiled Bronze paint.  Make sure you cover the items evenly.  You can also put another coat on a few hours later.  I'm sure you can do the coats less than hours apart but we were occupied with other things so we had time to let them cure a bit.  Next is to gently replace the pieces.

For our light fixture, we first had to switch off the power to the bathrooms (via the fuse box) and having to undo some wiring before we could actually detach the pieces from the wall mounted portion.  Just be careful with the wires.  If you think you won't be able to remember which wires get twisted, capped, etc, just take a picture of it.   When you have primed, painted the pieces and are ready to put them back up just make sure to gently tuck away any wires so they won't stick out or get squashed.

I am still working on the bathroom vanities, so keep an eye out for that post later!
